Seismic communication is known to be utilized in insects, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals, but its use has not yet
been documented in large mammals. Elephants produce low-frequency vocalizations, and these vocalizations have seismic components
that propagate in the ground, but it has not yet been demonstrated that elephants can detect or interpret these seismic signals.
In this study, we played back seismic replicates of elephant alarm vocalizations to herds of wild African elephants in their
natural environment and observed significant behavioral changes indicating that they had detected these signals. Seismic communication
may provide an important complement to existing communication modes used by elephants. Seismic sensitivity may also provide
elephants with an additional modality for sensing important environmental cues such as changes in weather patterns or seismic

Large populations of sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller), destroyed kelp beds along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia in the 1960's and 1970's. The origin of these large sea urchin populations is not understood. We have investigated the potential influence of variable growth and development of the planktonic larvae of sea urchins (in response to temperature and food abundance) on recruitment of benthic juveniles. The adult sea urchins were collected at Sandy Cove, Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada, in December 1986. Temperature strongly affected larval size and the growth of the echinus rudiment within the range 3° to 9°C, and larvae grew most rapidly at 14°C. Food abundance had a smaller effect on larval growth, and these effects were apparent only at high temperature. Larvae fed the same concentration of two different algal food species grew and developed similarly. Correspondence between spring temperature variation and qualitative variation in sea urchin recruitment, as well as strong temperature effects on larval growth in culture, and the occurrence of a large, positive temperature anomaly in June 1960, all suggest that temperature effects on larval growth and development may have led to intense sea urchin recruitment in 1960 and the appearance of large adult populations 4 to 6 yr later. Fractionation and composition of colloidal and suspended particulate materials in rivers 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The association of pollutants (nutrients, heavy metals and organic compounds) with colloidal and suspended particle matter (SPM) plays a dominant role in determining their transport, fate, biogeochemistry, bioavailability and toxicity in natural waters. A scheme for the fractionation and composition of colloidal and SPM from river waters has been tested. All four separation methods, i.e. sieving, continuous flow centrifugation, tangential flow filtration, sedimentation field-flow fractionation, were for the first time used to separate five size particulate fractions from river. Significant (gram) amounts of colloidal material (<1 microm) in three size ranges, nominally 1-0.2, 0.2-0.006 and 0.006-0.003 microm were obtained. The separation scheme was able to process large samples (100 l), within reasonable times (1 day) and the apparatus was portable. The aquatic colloid size was also characterized with high resolution by using sedimentation field-flow fractionation technique. The mass-based particle size distribution for the water sample showed a broad size distribution between 0.05 and 0.4 microm with the maximum around 0.14 microm. There was a systematic increase in the content of organic carbon (estimated by loss on ignition), Mg, Ca, Na, Cu and Zn with decreasing particle size, highlighting the importance of the colloidal (<1 microm) fraction. The structure of social animal groups can be dynamic, characterized by high rates of group fission and fusion. Despite this,
group composition is often well ordered by factors such as species, body size and by numerous other phenotypic traits. Research
in shoaling fishes has revealed that individuals refine group membership decisions still further and are capable of assimilating
chemical cues pertaining to recent habitat and prey use by prospective group mates, preferring to associate with others whose
recent resource use history closely matches their own. In this study, we firstly examined the dynamics of the formation and
breakdown of these preferences, revealing that they can be acquired and replaced in a matter of just a few hours. Using such
cues enables individuals to accurately assess the resource use of conspecifics, allowing them to indirectly sample the local
environment while reducing the chances of acquiring outdated information that can precipitate maladaptive behaviors. Secondly,
we found that shoals composed of individuals with shared recent habitat use history were more cohesive compared to those where
the constituent individuals differed in recent habitat use. Increased shoal cohesion may reduce predation risk, and could

Many exploited reef fish are vulnerable to overfishing because they concentrate over hard-bottom patchy habitats. How mobile reef fish use patchy habitat, and the potential consequences on demographic parameters, must be known for spatially explicit population dynamics modeling, for discriminating essential fish habitat (EFH), and for effectively planning conservation measures (e.g., marine protected areas, stock enhancement, and artificial reefs). Gag, Mycteroperca microlepis, is an ecologically and economically important warm-temperate grouper in the southeastern United States, with behavioral and life history traits conducive to large-scale field experiments. The Suwannee Regional Reef System (SRRS) was built of standard habitat units (SHUs) in 1991-1993 to manipulate and control habitat patchiness and intrinsic habitat quality, and thereby test predictions from habitat selection theory. Colonization of the SRRS by gag over the first six years showed significant interactions of SHU size, spacing, and reef age; with trajectories modeled using a quadratic function for closely spaced SHUs (25 m) and a linear model for widely spaced SHUs (225 m), with larger SHUs (16 standardized cubes) accumulating significantly more gag faster than smaller 4-cube SHUs (mean = 72.5 gag/16-cube SHU at 225-m spacing by year 6, compared to 24.2 gag/4-cube SHU for same spacing and reef age). Residency times (mean = 9.8 mo), indicative of choice and measured by ultrasonic telemetry (1995-1998), showed significant interaction of SHU size and spacing consistent with colonization trajectories. Average relative weight (W(r)) and incremental growth were greater on smaller than larger SHUs (mean W(r) = 104.2 vs. 97.7; incremental growth differed by 15%), contrary to patterns of abundance and residency. Experimental manipulation of shelter on a subset of SRRS sites (2000-2001) confirmed our hypothesis that shelter limits local densities of gag, which, in turn, regulates their growth and condition. Density-dependent habitat selection for shelter and individual growth dynamics were therefore interdependent ecological processes that help to explain how patchy reef habitat sustains gag production. Moreover, gag selected shelter at the expense of maximizing their growth. Thus, mobile reef fishes could experience density-dependent effects on growth, survival, and/or reproduction (i.e., demographic parameters) despite reduced stock sizes as a consequence of fishing. 相似文献

Focusing on a 2.2 million hectare area surrounding the Lolo National Forest in western Montana, USA, we illustrate a GIS method for predicting patterns of human use on public lands and highlighting potential for impacts on fish and wildlife species. Data inputs include human population count (derived from the 1990 Census), roads and trails, and the predicted distributions of bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) and 41 terrestrial vertebrates of special concern. Because results highlight areas where conflicts between humans and resources may occur, they are of potential use to land managers. Riparian forest restoration has become a major focus of watershed initiatives to improve degraded stream ecosystems. In urban watersheds, however, the ability of riparian forests to improve stream ecosystems may be diminished due to widespread, upland disturbance. This paper presents the methodology and some preliminary results from the first year of fieldwork on a 3-year project designed to assess the ecological benefits of riparian reforestation in urban watersheds. The study is based on an integrated, multidisciplinary sampling of physical, chemical, and biological attributes at forested and non-forested sections of 12 streams with different amounts of urban developement within their watersheds. Restored sections of three streams are also being monitored over the 3-year duration of the project. Sampling and analysis will continue through December 2000. 相似文献

Sustainability is becoming an increasing concern among communities across the United States. In response, a growing number of grassroots and public sector groups are initiating efforts to simultaneously address environmental, economic, and social issues, increase community well-being, and secure the long-term health of human and natural systems. Since 1990, dozens, if not hundreds, of sustainable communities projects have been initiated in cities, counties, and regions across the country.
